Prince Hall Grand Council History

On May 15, 1975, the first Council of Royal and Select Masters was established in the jurisdiction of Maryland, when the M.I. Prince Hall Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters, State of New York, issued a Charter to Owen H. Thompson Council No. 15, in the City of Baltimore. Some of the  earlier members of the Council were Herbert Alston Jr., Louis W. Alton, James C. Baker, Lonnie T. Bazemore, Fred L. Bennett, Calvin Boyd, Aaron Brown, Sr., Benjamin Brown, Joseph L. Clayton, Nathaniel L. Cornish, George M. Crawford, Jr., Alfred Dorsey, Carroll Dorsey, Aaron M. Gibbs, James E. Golden, Thomas M. Gross, William H. Gross, Jr., Kermit A. Hall, Jr., Harvey Harris, Bill Holman Jr., Leroy R. Isaac,  George E. Johnson, John H. Johnson, Richard V. Johnson, Willie C. Johnson, James J. Jones, Keith S. Jones, Nathaniel J. Jones, Robert E. Kerr, Jr., Robert M. Julius, Kenneth Law, Guy Jose Locklear, Louis L. Manigault, Earl H. Matthews, Robert Minor, Robert E. Mitchell, Norman I. Mullins, Carlton Murphy, Alvin M. Parks, Walter Pauls, III, Yeubeart L. Poe, Albert Queen Jr., Robert H. Roach, Floyd C. Roberts, Seth C. Robinson, Kevin D. Sanders, Augustus Scott, Roland Scott, William Scott Jr., Elijah Smith, Jr., James Smith, Walter H. Smith Jr., Willie A. Smith, Rather Speight, Herbert B. Stevenson, Perry W. Stewart, Sr., Albert R. Thaniel, Donald R. Thompson, Sr., James L.B. Ward, Chester W. Washington, Joseph L. Washington, William Wilson, Daryl X. Wise, and Maurice M. Wood, Jr.

In January of 1992, the membership of Owen H. Thompson No. 15, developed an overwhelming desire to establish a Grand Council for the State of Maryland. Then Thrice Illustrious Master, Richard V. Johnson, solicited the signatures of ten members of the Council who were willing to be the core group to establish a second and third council for that purpose. The ten Companions who were ultimately recruited were Fred L. Bennett, Joseph L. Clayton, William H. Gross, Jr., Kermit A. Hall, Jr., Leroy Isaac, James J. Jones, Keith S. Jones, Robert E. Mitchell, Robert H. Roach, and Chester W. Washington. Having obtained the approval of M.W. Grand Master Samuel T. Daniels, Thrice Illustrious Master Johnson prepared a Petition on March 21, 1992, for the establishment of Omega Council, U.D., which was immediately submitted to M.I. Floyd L. Bass, Thrice Illustrious Grand Master, M.I. Prince Hall Grand Council, Royal & Select Masters, State of New York.

Thereafter, at the Annual Grand Assembly of the M.I. Prince Hall Grand Council, State of New York, which was held on May 30, 1992, a Dispensation was granted by M.I. Maurice W. LaFate, the newly elected Thrice Illustrious Grand Master, to Omega Council, U.D. The Charter Officers were Companion Robert H. Roach, Thrice Illustrious Master, Companion Keith Jones, Deputy Master, and Companion Chester W. Washington, Principal Conductor of the Work. Simultaneously, the same requisite documents were also prepared and submitted by Thrice Illustrious Master Richard V. Johnson, for the establishment of a third Council to be styled as Alpha Council, U.D.

 

Upon completing the requisite period of operation pursuant to the Dispensation, and the submission and approval of its By-Laws, Charters were granted by Thrice Illustrious Grand Master, Maurice W. LaFate Sr., to Omega Council No. 24, and Alpha Council No. 25, Royal & Select Masters, in the City of Baltimore.

 

On July 9, 1994, by the action of the Past Thrice Illustrious Masters of Owen H. Thompson Council No. 15, Omega Council No. 24, and Alpha Council No. 25, and the assistance of the M.I. Prince Hall Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters, State of New York, the M.I. Prince Hall Grand Council, Royal & Select Masters, State of Maryland and Its Jurisdiction was duly organized. The Charter Officers were Companion Perry W. Stewart Sr., the first Thrice Illustrious Grand Master; Companion Yeubeart L. Poe, the first Deputy Grand Master; Companion Benjamin Brown, the first Grand Principal Conductor of the Work; Companion William C. Dare, the first Grand Treasurer; and Companion James E. Golden, the first Grand Recorder.

The documents mentioned herein are the original primary sources relative to the official history of the M.I. Prince Hall Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters in the jurisdiction of Maryland, and they have been safely preserved among the Grand Council archives.

Currently, the Grand Council has seven (7) constituent councils situated as follows: Owen H. Thompson Council No. 1, and Omega Council No. 2, located in Baltimore, Maryland; Alpha Council No. 3, located in Severna Park, Maryland; James C. Baker Council No. 4, located in Stuttgart, Germany; Yeubeart L. Poe Council No. 5, located in Aviano, Italy; Enoch Council No. 6, located in Rockville, Maryland; and Uric S.G. Hypolite Council No. 7, located in Kuwait. The Grand Council has successfully withstood the test of time and proudly looks forward to continued service to the Cryptic Rite.
